A little off the 30 Days thing here but I just want to talk about BYU Basketball for a few seconds (this is mostly for my benefit, to help me remember but feel free to keep reading). The last few days there has been alot of talk about BYU due to the dismissal of Brandon Davies from the Basketball team because he violated the school's honor code (by having sex with his girlfriend). As a student of BYU who has recently signed my contract that says I agree to live by those standards, I understand why this is happening but I realize it probably seems pretty ridiculous to some people. Without getting too into it I want to say that regardless of how ridiculous or "unrealistic" you think the honor code is, it is the standard that every student of BYU knows about and has specifically agreed to live by...basically we know what we're getting ourselves into. That being said I fell bad that Davies specific sins have been brought to light and become national news. I feel that "he violated the honor code" should have been sufficient without everybody knowing what he did wrong.
At first I was a little upset with this whole situation. Here we are, one of the best basketball teams in the country, poised to make a run for the championship and this happens. I was upset with Davies for screwing up, I was upset with BYU for being so strict and ridiculous, I was just upset (I'm very passionate about sports). But then I realized, bing mad was just stupid. Who I am to be upset with Davies, hes a 19 years old boy (that's my age), he made a mistake and I think is more that paying the price. I can't be upset with BYU for having the honor code when I know that it's for the best, even if it's messing with our Champ potential. The more I think about it (and trust me being on campus it's hard not to) the prouder I am to be a student of BYU who is held to such a high standard. I'm proud of my school for sticking to there guns and putting integrity before winning. I can promise that Davies is getting alot of love from all us students (check out the video above of the players cutting the net after winning the conference title and listen to the crowd chant) and am confident that BYU is handling the situation with love as well. Danny Ainge said alot of great things on the matter and if you're going to listen to an interview on the matter this is the one (it's the first 10 minutes of so):
Moving one, tonight I got to watch as BYU won the Mountain West Conference Championship. As I watched Jimmer Fredette leave the Marriot Center floor for the last time I was actually sad. I knew I was watching the end of an Era. As a huge sports fan I realize how lucky I have been to watch this all unfold. Plus, I got this participate in this awesome flash dance. We practiced it a few times before the game and then when the music started we just went for it. It was AWESOME.
Oh and if you're curious about what exactly the honor code is you can read it here:
